Chapter guide
Understand the disagreement before proposing a fix. Restate the other person’s concern and invite correction; polite agreement does not prove shared understanding. Their position may reflect accountability, limited resources or past commitments.
When sharing bad news, explain impact, containment, knowns and unknowns, next actions and the next update time. Adapt your explanation to the audience while keeping the facts consistent.
Repair trust through concrete actions and follow-through. Do not hide an old problem beneath a new promise or remove adverse evidence under relationship pressure.
Discussion question
Could the other person correct your restatement, and did you give them that opportunity?
